Work from home booms due to traffic jams: Jobstreet

Oct 30, 2017 | Solution, Traffic, Travel, Work

MANILA – Paralyzing traffic jams are forcing more Filipinos to work from home or rent living spaces near their offices, according to a jobs recruitment website.

Some 1.5 million Filipinos work from home and there could be a “phenomenal” increase of up to 20 percent year on year, said Jobstreet.com country manager Philip Gioca.

Online English tutors, healthcare and insurance workers, scriptwriters, and those who do documentary and accounting work make up most of the home-based workforce, Gioca told ABS-CBN News.

The Philippine economy loses up to P2.4 billion daily due to traffic, according to a Japanese study and the government has set a P8 trillion infrastructure program to solve the problem.

Top management and CEOs who are not allowed to work from home rent condominiums near their offices, Gioca said.

“There is also a trend of sharing houses, sharing rooms near the office,” he said.

Some employers also allow more flexible working schedules to cater to a younger workforce who yearn for work-life balance.

“(Employee) Generations are younger and they want more flexibility in time. They opt to work at home and spend more time on other stuff,” Gioca said.

Though employers save on operating costs, there is no measure yet on the productivity of employees who work from home, he said.
