Belly pressing refers to a method wherein the stomach is put under intense pressure in order to release tension, typically caused by water, gas, or fecal matter trapped within the abdomen. If you run a cursory search about it online, you are bound to find several videos that show how it works. Go ahead, we’ll wait.
However, this video shared by Facebook page “Medical Cool” involved belly pressing as a means to deliver a baby.
The video has gone extremely viral, with over 7,000 reactions, more than 16,000 shares and a whopping 2,812,342 views as of this writing. The video does not provide any information regarding the identity of the participants as well as the location in its caption.
Once you hit the “play” button, you will see a group of women wearing masks and medical uniforms. One of them was using her elbow to press down on the belly of a woman who was lying down with her legs open. As the woman pressed down with her elbow, she counted with every press.
The other women counted along in unison while the belly pressing continued. This happens for several intense seconds.
Once you reach the 25-second mark, you will hear the cries of a newborn baby. The belly pressing stops as the women attend to the newly minted mother. One of them wipes sweat from the new mother’s relieved face.
According to Cochrane, what occurred in the video most likely featured fundal pressure. Fundal pressure is usually performed during the second stage of giving birth. The site states:
“Applying fundal pressure by pushing on the mother’s abdomen in the direction of the birth canal is often used to assist spontaneous vaginal birth, shorten the length of the second stage and reduce the need for instrumental birth (forceps- or vacuum-assisted) or caesarean section.”
“It is particularly relevant in low-resource settings where options for operative birth are limited or not available. Manual pressure can be applied each time the woman has a contraction.”
Meanwhile, many netizens expressed their carious comments after seeing the shocking video. Here are some of them:
