  • Two college students were arrested after discovering pots of marijuana plants inside the unit.

Two college students were nabbed by the police for growing seeds of marijuana inside their apartment in Laguna. Dulce Amor Carcosia, a senior veterinary medicine student of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), and her boyfriend Joshua Gregorio, an information technology student of Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) bought the seeds online.

The couple was reported to the police because of the smell coming from the apartment which they suspected was marijuana. Police then conducted a raid and discovered that they are also selling the cannabis within the university area.

“According to them, [you] just [have to] go to eBay and click on ‘cannabis.’ They get them for like P1,300 per five seeds and (once grown), they sell the leaves for P1,500 per gram,” said Supt. Arvin Avelino, Los Baños police chief.

Carcosia and Gregorio admitted that they also smoke marijuana. In an interview with ABS-CBN, Gregorio reiterated that marijuana is “herbal” and “medicinal”.

“Dapat hindi maging ignorante ang mga tao pagdating sa ganung bagay. Medicinal at tsaka herbal naman po kasi yan eh,” said Gregorio.

“Saka sa ibang bansa po, legal po yan eh,” he added.

More than 20 plastic and paper cups containing marijuana seeds and seedlings were seized by the police, along with glass pipe and weighing scale. Police had been receiving reports about students smoking marijuana in the area, which led them to the young couple.

UPLB Vice Chancellor Dr. Portia Lapitan said she was “saddened and surprised” upon knowing that one of their students was involved in the illegal activity. The university reached to Carcosia and her parents.

Lapitan also said that Carcosia will be facing disciplinary action, of which the maximum punishment could be expulsion from the university.

“We don’t know what made her do it,” Lapitan said.

The police filed non-bailable charges of illegal possession and cultivation of marijuana against the couple on Thursday.
